DWI Accidents: Statistics During the Holiday Season of 2016
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, alcohol played a major role in many fatality related crashes during the holiday season of 2016. During Thanksgiving, it was determined that 23 of 52 crashes were caused by at least one driver committing DWI. These accidents alone caused 12 fatalities. New Year’s saw another 11 DWI crashes caused by alcohol, with 12 fatalities as a result. When the three holiday periods are grouped together and compared to the rest of the year, it becomes obvious that more vehicles on the road, combined with more alcohol being consumed, leads to a high amount of DWI related fatalities on our roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2016, 28% of all traffic related fatalities in the country had one driver with a Blood Alcohol Content of at least .08, the legal limit in Texas. As you can see from the numbers above, Texas is surpassing that national percentage. This is certainly not something that Texans should be proud of, nor is it something to be ignored or accepted.
